First off, thank you to all who offered words of comfort and support! I really wanted to answer each of you individually, especially because some of you are going through or have gone through things very similar or just as serious. But at a certain point, it becomes hard for me after the initial release to keep talking about it, so I'm copping out and giving you a general thank you. You know who you guys are and you're awesome! Hugs!
Next off, surprisingly never done this one even though I'm just full to brimming with controversial fandom opinions! Snatched from
writenagel1: Name a fandom, and I'll give you the scoop on at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.
Peace, Ghani

on 2009-07-01 10:45 pm (UTC)Mehehehehe, we are titans of maturity! ;-)
I basically agree about the comics. They've expanded on the lore and mythology, but I don't feel like Johnny has gotten any good development since Ennis wrote him. Personal opinion there, hehe.
Exactly! And Ennis is so good (uh oh, Ennis love fest about to begin in five, four, three....) that he imbues Ghost Rider with a personality, Johnny's to be exact, because he spends little to no time (I can't remember if he changes to Johnny at all in Ennis' story) in human form and yet there's so much more, well, personality there!
Ooh, LotR! I think I'll have to divvy this up into two as well, because I used to be one of those pains in the ass book purists until I realized how obnoxious an unappealing they were, gave them the middle finger and jumped ship, heh!
Movies:
- I can't watch the theatrical versions. I own all three of the Extended Editions and the movies just don't seem like complete movies unless I'm watching those; the others feel... unfinished, truncated.
- I love Arwen. Unequivocally. From the books. And I was one of the few fans (that's putting it mildly!) who was fairly excited about the Helm's Deep stuff. And then they chickened out and I had a falling out with other Arwen fans who now consider me a basher because what they replaced it with basically crumbles the foundations of her character as being the constant, the steady and unwavering evening star guiding the way home. She buggers off the the Grey Havens. Well, that's just %$#&^ great! And I'm sorry, but it does look like she's pregnant and that's the only reason she returns, no matter what Jackson and Co. have to say about it! It also buggers up the pacing of TTT, trying to make up for all that lost material, and the movie never recovers, in my opinion. The council Elrond would have had in Lothlorien with Galadriel and Celeborn is some vague psychic vision now, Arwen's slouching off to the West with her tail between her legs and the "flashbacks" are confusing and mostly considered dreams because they never realized the idea of following Arwen and Aragorn's relationship from the beginning. *Takes deep breath* It's something I feel strongly about, can you tell? ;-)
- I'm not sympathetic to Smeagol at all. And Frodo's empathy at times borders on the psychotic. I understand what they were trying to do with it but I resent being told to like and understand the sociopathic little monster, that we're all just really like him. No, I'm not, thank you kindly. So the parts that are supposed to be touching... yeah, they just zoom past me.
There are more, but I'll spare you! ;-)
Books:
- No, Tolkien wasn't a feminist, but he wasn't a sexist either. He was a humanist, and his female characters, though few and far between, exhibit all the same traits, bad and good, that his male characters do, just without an emphasis on their existence. I venture to believe that if someone like Eowyn or Galadriel had been included in a book by a known feminist, they'd be praised for the characterization!
- The books are not exclusively the story of the Hobbits, nor is Aragorn clearly the hero. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in between with a more balanced view of each part of the story. I refuse to take a side on it.
- Eowyn's story arc is complete and it's beautiful; Tolkien gives her both glory and peace of mind and her decision to become a healer instead of continuing as a warrior doesn't undermine the strength of her character because, well, she learns it from Faramir! and being a warrior really isn't the greatest thing a woman can become, despite what certain feminists will have you believe. she comes off first and foremost as a person who makes the best choices for herself, which is the best thing a woman can do!

on 2009-07-01 10:57 pm (UTC)Oh man, did I get in some flame wars about that kind of thing. It wasn't an attempt to make the Hobbits sound more heroic than Aragorn or anything like that... There was this PSYCHO who believed that Boromir was the rightful king of Gondor, because she was desperately in love with the character. She would not relent on the subject, saying that he should've killed Frodo, taken the ring, and become king himself. And she was serious. I was stunned into silence by that, because I'm a Hobbit enthusiast myself, hehe. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill a Hobbit. But that's the kind of fans this thing attracts, so I don't blame you for not wanting to get into it with anyone, lol!
Terminator Series. :D

on 2009-07-01 11:15 pm (UTC)But, my God, I don't think even eowynshieldmaiden said anything quite as crazy as that! 0_0 Boromir's... Boromir's a psycho path! Worse in the books, it's true; so bad, in fact, that it took me a good long while to warm to him in the movies and then finally adore him! Just.... frightening!
Hm, Terminator! Dunno if any of my opinion are particularly unpopular...
- I have to watch the extended version of T2 because I needs me my Kyle/Sarah dream scene! Again, the movie doesn't feel complete without it because, well, it's a great hearkening to the first movie but it's also got so much emotional heart in that one, small cut scene!
- Though I'm glad Salvation exists (less so the third one), I still don't really see the need for more after the end of T2 offers so much hope for a changed future. I kind of like the ambiguity of, 'Well, we took care of that. Now let's see what happens.' unfortunately, just what they thought was going to happen happens, which I suppose some would tell me was inevitable to support Kyle's existence in the first movie but, still! I didn't see the Robot Wars as an inevitability after T2 and the release of the third one made me sad because of that.
- God, people pick on Edward Furlong, but I think Thomas Dekker was pretty insufferable in Sarah Connor Chronicles! By far the weeniest of the Johns!
