Literature Meme
1) What are you reading right now?
Lost by Gregory Maguire
2) Longest book you've ever read:
Um, either the unabridged unedited The Stand by stephen King or The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. Possibly Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens. I don't know the comparative page counts, and paper consistency and size always makes a difference...
3) Strangest title of a book that you’ve read:
Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way by Bruce Campbell
4) Stupidest ending of a book you’ve read:
Can't really recall one I've thought, 'Tch, that's really stupid...'
5) Which literary character have you related to the most?
Okay, this is gonna be a little scary 'cause I tend to relate to female characters that are real damaged goods, so to speak. Nell from The Haunting of Hill House; Eowyn from The Lord of the Rings, and the real literary source, not the aspersions cast upon her by the movies or any literary critics; Wendy, Jack and Danny Torrance from The Shining because, God, where do I begin? I wrote an essay about this one but have to sum it up here: They each represent a different personality in the cycle of abuse, each has been abused and the two adults have reacted in two different yet typical way--to become the abuser and to put yourself in a situation where you are abused again. Danny has the choice to become either or neither, and there's the hope at the end that he's worked towards the latter; Lily from Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.
6) Do you prefer fiction or nonfiction?
Fiction, please! I've not the mindset to read nonfiction; I need a strong narrative.
7) Did you have a series of children’s/young adult books that you once enjoyed?
Llolyd Alexander's The Prydain Chronicles. Still do love 'em!
8) Can you enjoy reading the source book after seeing the screen adaptation?
Yes, I can. It sometimes actually helps me picture the characters more clearly. And I'm always curious to see the way in which the movie diverged from the source material, and vice versa for that matter!
9) Have you ever read a novelization of a movie or TV show?
Yes, I have, many in fact. More when I was young; the novelization used to be the first piece of merchandise I picked up. It seems either I've really grown out of them or the authors have really stopped trying to do anything with them. Maybe it's both. They are fantastic for discovering deleted subplots and scenes. Willow remains one of my favorites because it includes the story of Sorsha's father.
That said, I do read an awful lot of licensed literature, like the Star Wars EU and the copious quality amounts of Doctor Who novels.
10) Book that "turned you on" the most, erotically speaking:
I find that Clive Barker is able to write erotica like no one else, straight or otherwise; as a matter of fact, his straight stuff is hotter than most of the stuff I've read by straight female authors. And the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, and if you know them, there's no need for me to explain.
11) Is there a real-life person that you’ve read more than one book about?
Is it cheating if I say Cleopatra, 'cause I've read historicals, fictional accounts--where sometimes she's only a side character--and archeological books that focus around her.
12) Book that everyone’s read but you:
Da Vinci Code. Meh. And George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire past A Game of Thrones; just couldn't find the interest to stick with the series.
13) Favorite "classic" writer/novelist:
Charlotte Bronte
14) Favorite contemporary novelist (let's say 1950's on):
Tolkien, though some of his stuff predates the 50s.
15) Favorite short story writer:
Shirely Jackson
16) Favorite columnist/journalistic writer:
Don't have one. I suppose I can count James Ellroy, though, who's one of my favorite authors period, because of the pieces he writes on crime for Vanity Fair. So, yeah, him.
17) Favorite poet:
Anne Sexton
18) Favorite guilty pleasure book or series:
Don't really feel guilty about anything I read; I'm pretty straightforward about it. If I had to pick, I guess I'd go with any of Teresa Medeiros' novels, my favorite being A Breathe of Magic. Okay, and the Dirk Pitt books by Clive Cussler, but those are really very clever!
19) Favorite book written by a famous actor or musician:
If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor by Bruce Campbell. Or There and Back Again: An Actor's Tale by Sean Astin.
20) Author whose work you once enjoyed but no longer do:
Not any that I can think of, other than children's book authors whose work I've outgrown.
