Ugh...fear of spiders...I can most certainly relate. I don't CARE how many times I'm told that, say, tarantulas are harmless and nice, I can't STAND the things!

The smaller spiders, I can handle, at least to some degree. If I find one crawling on my wall or ceiling, I get it into a jar, COVER the jar (since I don't want that eight-legged bit of ugly to get out and *shudder* crawl on me), and toss it outside, where it can catch bugs to its heart's content.

My sister once taunted me with a very realistic-looking rubber spider. My mother saw her do it the first time, and actually laughed when I shrieked. Some time later I asked her why she did that. She said, "It was pretty funny." No it wasn't, and I'll never forgive her for that, even if she did, officially, tell my sister not to do it again.

Other kids made fun of me for being scared of the rubber spider -- kids younger than I was showed me how dumb I was being by picking it up and playing with it. I DIDN'T CARE. I hated that thing as much as I hate real spiders, and screamed my head off if anyone brought it near me.

More than one person has told me how weird it is to be scared to death of spiders, but to like snakes, which I do. I don't see the connection. They're entirely different creatures. Whenever I go to the pet store to pick up some cat supplies, I always stop by the reptile section to admire the snakes. Once a guy was holding up his small son so the kid could see the snakes in the topmost cages, and the kid was all, "Oooohhh!" I said, "They're beautiful, aren't they?" The guy said, "Uch!" I shrugged. To each their own.

I don't think you're odd at all for your phobia of sunken ships. To me, it sounds like a cousin, so to speak, of the very understandable fear/phobia of being buried alive. But even if it isn't, there's nothing odd about it.
