One of my sister's coworkers came to their Halloween party dressed as Moss from The IT Crowd! Alas, she wasn't there because she'd taken the day off to spend it with me for my birthday, but no one knew who he was supposed to be and Ann would have!

First off, thank you, everyone, for your wonderful, beautiful and heartfelt birthday greetings! Some of you know, some of you don't, that I was alone on my birthday; it was my sister's day to work from noon (when I typically wake up) till 9:30 at night (with a half hour commute on either end), so I was feeling rather dejected and lonesome but your marvelous tidings cheered me right up! Thank you [livejournal.com profile] moetushie, [livejournal.com profile] shawnalasex and [livejournal.com profile] snowlullaby for the pretty graphics, [livejournal.com profile] dreamybritactor for the v-gift, [livejournal.com profile] musetrax for the smexy Justin Bartha and [livejournal.com profile] charleygirl for the greetings! Thank you [livejournal.com profile] may_child for the e-card and [livejournal.com profile] lastwordslinger for the e-mail (not to mention the lovely headers--I've got the second one up now!) I lurves ya all! Hugs!

Thanks to a friend of my sister's, I got the Mighty Boosh boxset on Thursday and on Friday, which my sister managed to take off, we watched the heck out of that thing! As a matter of fact, by the end of the day, we'd Booshed ourselves out! I also learned: Mike's Hard Lemonade, yeah, a bit stronger than Smirnoff's and to be wary of that, LOL! Even though Hard Pink Lemonade rock the hizzie!

And Halloween! (If you've been around on my flist long enough, you know we always do up Halloween; it's one of our favorite times of the year! If you haven;'t click on the 'Halloween' tag for pics from Halloweens past!) Well, I had a bit of a hiccup with my costume: my I Dream of Jeannie costume didn't fare so well in the wash and my Arwen gowns are, well, a bit too loose on me now that I've lost weight (don't think that I think that this is a bad thing! It was just a surprise!). So I gave my sister a bit of a fashion show until I found something she liked (a white satin 1930s nightgown I'd bought a while ago at an antique mall). I slapped on some black nail polish, some blue lipstick and, most importantly, my sister's long, black Samara wig and, poof! I was a zombie! Got lots of compliments as well! And all of this can only lead to a Halloween picspam!

Most zombies only care about the brains! Me? I was all about the cahn-dee!

If you've never heard of the horror cult-classic Trick 'r Treat, I don't blame you and neither does creator/writer/directer Michael Dougherty (co-writer of X2: X-Men united and Superman Returns, as well as alleged ghost writer on X-Men--Bryan Singer produced this movie and two of its stars, Anna Paquin and Brian Cox, are X-Men alum), who filmed the movie over two years ago and then watched as Warner Brothers neatly stuffed it on the shelf. I became intrigued immediately after seeing the trailer on the 300 DVD (to promote, at that time, a theatrical release that was never to be); everything about it dripped Halloween: the rich, autumnal colors, the glowing jack-o'-lanterns that seemed to populate every scene. My sister was the first to say it: It was as if someone made a movie specifically for me.

In the time between then and now, it was given two more separate release dates, none of which came to fruition, and played at endless horror film festivals and conventions, earning its cult status as one of the great, unnoticed gems. Warners finally relented and released the movie on DVD a week ago and I finally--finally--got my sweaty little mitts on it. So, did it live up to the hype?

Well, yes and no.

Beware: You will be spoiled by this review, I will discuss some of the more shocking twists of the movie! )

Um, wow. [livejournal.com profile] may_child sent me this pic of Harrison and Calista on Halloween and I felt I just had to share because...um, yeah, wow!

Photobucket

It's official, Harry's lost it. Well, as I told her, at least it's original. And good for one hell of a laugh as well! XD (I like how the "peas" by his crotch look like giant testes; I'm immature, i know, but c'mon! It's hilarious!)

Okay, so another year has come and gone. Unfortunately, though we decorated outside (a source of much pride as we received LOTS of very nice compliments last night) we didn't do much inside like we have other years (clicky on the 'Halloween' tag to see for yourselves!) and Ann was feeling kind of yucky from her pain killers and had been dressed up for work this year anyways so she just wanted to relax. But you know I couldn't go a year without dressing up!

This started out as a disco zombie (we dubbed it Panic! At the Disco, Disco of the Dead, The death of Disco, etc.) but we were getting really little kids and I wanted to do something fun. So I'm kind of a wacky disco alien! With my hair down and the sunglasses on, by the way, I totally looked like a Barbie from mine and my sister's generation!

We come in peace, man!

And so endeth Halloween and the Holiday season begins. I'll start taking the decorations down today, which will make me sad, but I have our Christmas lights to look forward to! Decorations, you have served me well! One guy who hardly spoke English pointed to them, gave me the thumbs up and told me, "Best in whole development!"

The most flattering, though, was my little friend Jack; I see him when he's walking his doggie Dewey and I'm out walking Pebbles, and he likes to talk to me. When I answered the door, he was so surprised it was me who lived here and his mom told me that they'd saved our house for last because of our awesome decorations! My sister and I feel like maybe we should get free rent for a month for this (the first year we lived here they had a costume contest for free rent; we didn't win but no one's ever liked a costume as much as they've liked our decorations!) But we're just happy that the kids liked 'em so much!

Peace, ya dig it? Ghani

Halloween was kind of a dud. The whole neighborhood looked as if they were battening down for a hurricane: doors locked, lights turned off. Hardly conducive for a pleasant trick or treating atmosphere. And the kids must have felt it because, unlike last year, we just didn't get that many. (I'm just not the party type, you see; I prefer the handing out candy and making kids jump when answering the door to being surrounding by a hundred slutty Dorothys and alices and nurses.) My Samhain celebration was more rockin', which is saying a lot. Mostly sat home and watched Ghost Hunters Live and ate our left over candy, which is not exactly conducive to my diet!

I snapped pics nontheless, but you knew that already, didn'tcha? ;-)

On to the cahndy! Definitely not dial-up friendly )

Finally, have you ever experienced anything of a ghostly nature?

I felt my g-ma's presence in my childhood house up until the day we moved. One time I was lying on the couch with my back to the path you'd take to walk to her room; my sister had moved in and went in and out all day, would sometimes stop and comment on whatever I was watching and then go. I felt someone pass, dammit I could even feel the gentle rush of air a person creates in their wake; I could almost hear breath as a kind of sense beyond my hearing--I *felt* it in that other way of feeling things. It felt like they paused right behind me like my sister did so very often. After a couple of seconds I turned to say something to her, so very, very sure she was there, and there was no one.

I've had some "elevator dropping out from under me" moments in supposedly haunted places, in the seance room at the Winchester Mystery House, then during my paranormal class' field trip;the latter in two different rooms: The first time it happened, I was in the dining room, I felt dizzy and looked up and the ceiling seemed to be stretching upwards even as I stared at it; a group after us later recorded a very high EMF level. The second was in an upstairs bedroom where even my skeptical partner felt something uneasy queasy about it. We walked over to the bed and didn't like standing there so we moved on quickly. we later learned that the girl who used to sleep in that room often witnessed a menacing apparition of a man walking up to the bed from the door in almost the exact route we took.

While the comm is far, far from done, I've uploaded two of my Halloween Hornblower fanfics over at [livejournal.com profile] evenstar_tales:

The Nightjar (Author's Choice) and

The Wayward Soul (also Author's Choice)

Hopefully I'll have more time to work on the comm and upload more stories; so far, I've only five out of twenty-seven (twenty-five of those complete!) Some might need a bit of reworking and might be either posted in different forms or changed after posting, but I do want to get them out there for your reading pleasure, gentle soul!

I'm depressed. Heck, sez you, it's a depressing world, which is true, naturally. But what is it specifically that's got me down today? Costumes.

You see, Halloween is not just a holiday to me, it's a Holy Day (well, okay, technically the two mean the same thing, the former's a contraction but I'm being dramamtic. Don't interupt me...) and the choice of costume is an important thing. I've browsed online quite a bit, found some I'm interested in, but it wasn't until I went to our local costume store that it really started to sink in: costumes are not made for the bigger girls. I'm not saying fat, or even heavy; you couldn't fit one of my 38Ds in these teeny little tops and dresses!

Standard, it seems, is an 8 dress size; a curious choice considering that the standard for women's actual dress sizes has risen in the past handful of years. But it's not just the waist that's a concern, it's the arms (an adult Arwen costume I purchased a back in 2002 actually bruised my bicep, it was so tight!) and bust. An Elektra costume, marked as "standard, fits up to size 16" looked as if my sister, a size 4, would have had trouble fitting into it. They seem to generally be at least two sizes smaller than they claim.

And the real insult was that, it seemed the sexier the costume, the less likely it was to be available in a larger size. Some were remarkably advertising bigger sizes, like a *gasp* extra large in some cases, but they just weren't in stock.

And this isn't a thing exclusive to my podunk Halloween emporium either. Go ahead, take a looki around the internet. Know what you'll find? A sea of mediums, smalls and even a large amount of extra smalls. Larges or -Heaven forfend!- extra larges are rarer than an intact jack-o-lantern on November 1st! And when and where they can be found, they're often odd and ill fitting.

I was even disheartened to find that Torrid, the big girls' haven, had little or nothing compared to their sister company, Hot Topic, by way of Halloween costume; the store didn't even have a display and the website has almost nothing. Ooh, goth vampire. Yup, that's original and looks supisciously like something they'd sell any other day of the year in a Hot Topic related store.

I'll make due, I always do, but what a sad world we live in when so many members of the population are denied the simple pleasure of walking into a store, picking out the costume they feel suits them and wearing it proudly on THE BIG DAY. When women, voluptuous, gorgeous women are made to feel inadequate because Supergirl apparently gets her costumes at the Krypton equivalent of 5-7-9.

Peace, Ghani
