Bye bye, blonde locks!
Dec. 11th, 2009 08:25 pmI got my hair cut! And it looks gorgeous! If you've seen pictures of me in the past couple of years (click on any of my holiday tags for this journal) you know my hair was massively long and quickly getting out of hand. I'd started to sit on it! And it was actually starting to give me panic attacks having it falling on me all the time so it was time for a change. The woman at Master Cuts, my sister's usual stylist, couldn't believe how much hair she took off, even after she cut my ponytail off (to donate to charity wig maker Locks of Love!)

001. What first got you into Merlin?
I was semi-interested from the first time I'd heard the BBC were doing it just because I'm interested in fantasy and the Arthurian myths. I'm really the RenFaire attending, cosplaying Tolkien whilst listening to Loreena McKennitt type, and if you want to take that as a joke you can but it's not too far off. But I'm going to be really shallow because I musn't tell lies and admit that it was Santiago Cabrera's involvement that really got my attention. At first, I was a bit ambivalent because I thought, 'Oh, they're trying to do the modern, hip thing, and it's going to end up like Robin Hood, only not as clever.' And then it was Santiago as Lancelot and I was like, "Where do I sign up?!" Of course, I read the press release wrong at first and thought he was going to be a regular but by the time I'd finally resolved to watch it, they were, like, three episodes in so I didn't have to wait that long to see him and I still hold out hope that they'll add him to the main cast!
002.Why are you so awesome? Your absolute favorite movie of all time is...?
It's in my Jeans. Geddit?! It's funny, mate! God, this is such a reflex response, but it is and has been since I was three years old: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Sometimes I really wish I could come up with something more original than that but... there you go.
003. What's the fandom that you never get to talk about?
I've got quite a few actually! The one that comes to mind immediately is Carnivale because I just don't know anyone who's even seen it and the people I tried to talk with when it was still on the air... didn't get me or my ideas at all.
004. What's the historical or fictional figure you most identify with?
I love the Adamses. Not, like, the Addams Family, but John and Abigail and Sam and John Quincy. I love that they were over-educated and pugnacious, that Abigail was very level-headed and often John's touchstone. If I'm being honest, I'm the most like Sam. I was this documentary about the Founding Fathers once that said that Samuel Adams was good at getting revolutions started, he had a sort of incendiary passion, but didn't really have the discipline to follow it through. So, yeah, I can definitely identify with that. I mean, how many of our Founding Fathers were actually physically involved in the Boston Tea Party?! Oh, and Mary Todd Lincoln, because she was completely mental. But so were the Adamses, I guess, just in a different way...
ETA: I just noticed the 'Or Fictional' stipulation, and had to add that I really do identify with Eleanor in Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House more than is healthy or that I ought to admit to, as well as Eowyn from Lord of the Rings, Tolkien's work not necessarily the movies because I felt she was a bit weepy in those for the cold, stoic lady she should be.
005.If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be? Favorite food?
Oh, something totally unoriginal like pizza. I don't really like to eat, to be honest, especially after my mom passed; she used to make the most amazing Greek food from scratch. So I do tell a lie: my favorite food is my mother's dolma, which are stuffed grape vine leaves, I just haven't had them in about five years.
Peace, Ghani

Username meme!
Feb. 5th, 2009 12:54 pmFrom
moetushie:
What's the inspiration behind your username?
The very simplest explanation is that it's a combination of two of my very first fandoms, which also have quite a bit to do with each other: Ghani is short for Ghanima, a character from the Dune series, and Starkiller, an arcane reference to the original name George Lucas had picked before deciding it sounded too violent and coming up with Skywalker. (I do not, in fact, want to kill any celebrities!)
What made me choose it is a different story altogether! To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. I role-played as the character (Luke and Leia's distant, distant relative from the future, writing the gospel of the Jedi, The Journal of the Whills, 200 years after the original trilogy took place. Read about it here!) on MySpace before joining LJ. Seeing as every permutation of Evenstar, my most commonly used username, was basically taken, I kind of reverted to my Ghani personality.

I think it's inevitable that as we read each other's journals we create mental pictures of each other. Post this on your own journal to find out who your friends see when they read about your life.
Two Rules:
1) The person must be in the movies or on TV (but doesn't have to be an actor/actress). The person can be specific to a role (e.g. Jennifer Elhe's Elizabeth Bennett) or just the person him/herself.
2) You have to post a link to a picture of said person in the comments.
In other news, still sick with what I now suspect is the flu. Bleh. Going to lie down now.

Jun. 27th, 2008 01:16 pmI've actually had a lot of these on my interests list in the past but apparently you can only have 100 interests so I always have to keep trimming down. Most refer to things that are already on my interests lists, like characters and what not. Interesting nonetheless...

Jun. 6th, 2008 12:29 pmThis is freaky accurate:

The harmony-seeking idealist is characterised by a complex personality and an abundance of thoughts and feelings. He is a warm-hearted person by nature. He is sympathetic and understanding. He expects a lot of himself and of others. He has a strong understanding of human nature and is often a very good judge of character. But he is mostly reserved and confides his thoughts and feelings to very few people he trusts. He is deeply hurt by rejection or criticism. He finds conflict situations unpleasant and prefers harmonious relationships. However, if reaching a certain target is very important to him he can assert himself with a doggedness bordering on obstinacy.
This personality type has a lively fantasy, often an almost clairvoyant intuition and is often very creative. Once he has tackled a project, he does everything in his power to achieve his goals. In everyday life, he often proves to be an excellent problem solver. He likes to get to the root of things and has a natural curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. At the same time, he is practically oriented, well organised and in a position to tackle complex situations in a structured and carefully considered manner. When he concentrates on something, he does so one hundred percent - he often becomes so immersed in a task that he forgets everything else around him. That is the secret of his often very large professional success.
As a partner, the harmony-seeking idealist is loyal and reliable; a permanent relationship is very important to him. He seldom falls in love head over heels nor does he like quick affairs. He sometimes finds it very difficult to clearly show his affection although his feelings are deep and sincere. In as far as his circle of friends is concerned, his motto is: less is more! As far as new contacts are concerned, he is approachable to only a limited extent; he prefers to put his energy into just a few, close friendships. His demands on friends and partners are very high. As he does not like conflicts, he hesitates for some time before raising unsatisfactory issues and, when he does, he makes every effort not to hurt anyone as a result.
Adjectives which describe your type
introverted, theoretical, emotional, planning, idealistic, harmony-seeking, understanding, peace-loving, sensitive, quiet, sympathetic, conscientious, dogged, complicated, inconspicuous, warm-hearted, complex, imaginative, inspiring, helpful, demanding, communicative, reserved, vulnerable

What's a-matta you?
Sep. 12th, 2007 08:03 pmComments for this post will be disabled just because I'm really not looking for a pity party, which this sort of thing always comes across as. I just wanted to let my friends who read this journal and perhaps haven't heard from me as much as they should have done know what's up.
So, what's happening in my little world? Well, it's obvious I'm in the first stages of a nervous breakdown; been through two before, and I'm well accustomed to the symptoms by now. I'm throwing up everything, even when I just take a sip of water, and I only sleep and hour to two hours each night, despite the alleged assistance of my meds. It's a chemical thing and it's so frustrating because of all the things I don't have control over, that's one thing I have the least control over, if that makes sense. The last time I went through this, I had my mom to literally and figuratively pick me up off the floor; it's a little scary now because my sister's sympathetic but she doesn't know really how to help me (it took my mom a long time to figure that one out--too long, one could argue). So I'm feeling really alone and frightened right now, which can't be helping. She's been really, really fantastic and supportive and sympathetic, but even I don't know what I need so how can I expect her to know or how to tell her?
And on top of everything else, I may have stopped my vigorous bruxism but my gums didn't stop hurting on the right side and today I realized why: My wisdom tooth is coming in there, painfully and slowly, at the worst time possible.
Life really, really sucks sometimes.
Anyhoo, 'cause I could really use a larff:
( Completely inappropriate humor behind the cut! )

Bits and bobs
Aug. 28th, 2007 12:29 pmYou know when you take a bite of a andwich or something, and then you try to talk, so you sort of shove it to the side of or under your tongue? That's how Scott Stapp sings.
picklepopsicle calls it the pickle in the mouth.
I don't mean to sound like a fanatic or anything, but I did grow up around one of the most (unintentionally) inconsiderate smokers I've ever known and this is an observation: I haven't gotten really sick in a long time. I mean like coughing up hard bits of brown and grey...somethings. I seriously think it's because I'm not around my mom smoking all the time anymore. I never got sick like that when I was young, and haven't since she passed on; there was just that period of about fifteen years when I was a shut in and near her all the time. I loved my mom but she used to sit there and tut about people complaining over second hand smoke while the rest of the family, two chronic asthmatics, would be choking until they were purple in the face.
I miss having a bedroom "suite." I don't like to be seen before I've gotten myself ready. It's not like, "Don't look at me! I'm a monster!" It's more like a matter of privacy. The first house we lived in when we moved to Florida, I was completely private; the second, there was this pocket door that shut in the second and third bedrooms along with the bathroom, so that was as good as a private suite. Here, I have to parade across the hall to the bathroom; I don't care for it.
I think I might be having a mid-mid-life crisis. My celebrity crushes are getting younger and younger, as I pointed out to my sister last night, if you take, from the beginning of the year, Nicolas Cage and then progress down to Shia LaBeouf, which I really do feel like the creepy lady in the car offering him candy. I mean, there are older men and men my age, like Jeffrey Donovan or Edgar Wright, but then there's the Shias and Garrett Hedlunds. My sister was surprised but then admitted that she had had a dream in which I was romantically involved with Daniel Radcliffe.
Which is pretty flattering, 'cos Harry Potter's hung!
I'm extremely bored.

Discombobulated thoughts...
May. 4th, 2007 11:55 amOff to see Spider-Man 3 in about a half an hour; got to get there early because all shows sold out in advance round these parts and I want a good seat. Excited to see it and hyped especially to see Bryce Howard--she don't do so much so she's hard to have as a favorite actress!
I'm back to my Johnny/Roxanne layout 'cause, well, I do believe that it's the nicest, most gawgeous header I have. Wish I had graphic capabilities, so to speak, though I don't think I have the eye for it. I collected a bunch of piccies from Willow the other day just in case though; they'd make a nice header and a couple would be really good icons. Mmm, Madmartigan and Sorsha...
Killing time until I leave for the movie...
Ooh, finally got the Shivering Isles expansion to work on my Xbox 360. Me likey! Now I have to download the patch so, like, my game doesn't absolutely crash!
Peace, Ghani
