Honestly, I think he started getting a raw deal the moment they cut his hair -- that mop top was just perfect in its, I don't know, Zack-ness.
Yes!!! This, exactly! See, I'm basically catching up on the show in reruns on TNT and the change in appearance was just jarring without seeing the episode where it happened. And then I did the other day, and I groan right along with Zack when Angela tells him he'll have to lose his floppy hair. Not to mention the fact that--huh?! He has to look respectable and neat to work there?! Has anyone looked at Hodgins closely lately?!
I think he loses some of his boyishness with the change in style, and, I dunno if I can explain it right but it's like he lost some of his humanity with it, the stuff that made him relatable. He didn't get stories anymore about competing with Hodgins for the package delivery lady's attentions etc. He was kind of just there to act strange and stiffly; any real characterization was just... gone.
I hated that he turned out to be "evil," although I think TPTB realized that they'd gone too far and started backpedaling in the next season, making him not DIRECTLY to blame or something like that.
I saw that one before I'd seen the repeat of the one where it had revealed what he'd done, heh. And I was upset because, the heck, dude?! But thank goodness if it's retconning a little on the 'he killed someone!' plotline!
About Sweets--well, I'm always gonna love John Francis Daley. in anything. Since he was a kid in Freaks and Geeks right through that Ryan Reynolds/Justin Long movie and Kitchen Confidential, so yeah i like Sweets, too, and his character's adorable. I did resent him at first as kind of taking Zack's place (it's a silly thing to do but sometimes fannish things aren't entirely rational) but he's just too damned... sweet! LOL!
The new episode I caught on FOX, or fairly new, had some young new intern who looked as if he was supposed to be extremely attractive but really did nothing for me. Dammit, I like my geniuses awkward and unusual!
