I'm not quite sure what to say that won't sound trite. I so hate sounding trite.
I think all authors base characters on themselves, to some extent. I can understand wanting to kill off a character who's showing too much of your own 'bad' side, even though I've never been in quite that situation.
I hope you sort yourself out, and I wish you a very happy ending to the story.
