Or you'd cry. In the wake of Katrina, I have seen more inexcusible examples of price gouging that is precendented (I'm right near Lousiana; about a three hour drive to the state border)! So to you, Mr. Gas Station Owner in Atlanta who is charging $7 a gallon:

on 2005-09-06 10:50 pm (UTC)PUT A F***ING CAP ON THE GAS PRICES, BUSH!!!
But he won't do it. No. That would make his already filthy rich oil buddies mad.
I loathe him.
His apologists are pretending that people blame him for the hurricane itself. WRONG. They are blaming him for his INCOMPETENCE BEFORE AND AFTER THE HURRICANE HIT.
The rich culture and history of New Orleans will be wiped away to make room for casinos and condos for the ultrarich. Mark my words.

on 2005-09-06 11:18 pm (UTC)To the Governor of Georgia's credit, he's forgoing a gas tax to try to end just this type of gouging. That's by far the worst I've seen though many areas around my are up to $3.50 or $3.75 and are or are pretending to be out of anything but high-grade.
Not only did he try to dismiss this because it couldn't help his political career, our esteemed pres. damage control is piss poor and no matter how much our so called liberal media (including and especially the NYTimes!) tries to brainwash us into making this less important than it is, our country has changed forever. The death toll is estimated to be around 10,000 at this point. It's not just going to go away like they all hope.
Peace, Ghani
P.S.
on 2005-09-06 11:27 pm (UTC)There's already talk about rebuilding the French Quarter, i.e. the Tourist Areas. The Garden District was semi-unaffected because it's on higher ground than the rest of the city (quite literally "uptown") so that's something I, s'pose. No talk, naturally, about rebuilding the shattered remains of downtown, i.e. the ghetto. New Orleans is going to become Disney World, not a city.
Mr. President, what is the difference between a family looting a supermarket and a few people looting jewelry and electronics? Nothing, they're both the same cos they're both stealing and that's wrong? Wrong! Of course, if aid had gotten to them sooner, maybe they wouldn't have been so desperate for food...
Have you read Anne Rice's op-ed piece about black history in New Orleans? Fantastic stuff!

on 2005-09-07 12:42 am (UTC)10,000 dead. Good Lord.
Gas averages about $3.00 where I am. I'm not complaining, being as other areas of the country, like yours, have it worse.
Hybrid vehicles were already flying off showroom floors. I bet you they'll fly even faster now.
