One of my favorite movies and the one we watch every year on this day...

My favorite number, and the funniest:

And something a bit more somber:

Peace, Ghani

Incredible! As Mr. Adams would say, though without the sarcasm in this case, heh. I first watched the movie way back when I was in fifth grade and I'll always remember how I just thought it was fun or funny or light and then the serious numbers started coming up and it was wonderfully heart-wrenching! People don't think of Northerners as having sensitive or gentile constitutions but I remember when Molasses to Rum came up and it genuinely shocked me. I think I asked my teacher afterward, "Is that true?!"

Is there a song in the history of Broadway musicals that tackles such a complex political and economic issue, let alone makes it comprehensible and sells it so successfully as great drama?

John Cullum for the WIN!

I love 1776! I got it to watch on the fourth and forget where I put the movie. DOH! Love all the songs - BUT - Mama Look Sharp. Sad and a bit too close to home. I completely agree with your other suggestions! :D I don't know which I can say is my number one favorite - but, the songs I think of first when I think of 1776 is "The Lees of Old Virginia", "Yours, Yours, Yours" and "He Plays the Violin".

Have you seen this? -->> http://www.1776themusical.us/
It is a link to a website all about the musical! Although wikipedia has a bit more detail about the musical. :D

Oh, so many terrific numbers, it was hard to narrow it down to the ones I did!

That site is fantastic! I love the pictures. William Daniels as John Adams--it just doesn't get much better than that for me! =-D
