Right after it was announced (and, yes, I mean almost immediately after) that John Malkovitch was signed on to play Vulture in "Spider-Man 4", Sony dropped a bomb by announcing that they were completely rebooting the franchise, scrapping any and all plans for SM4.

Well, fuck. At the moment, I'm so pissed at Marvel, and thinking that Iron Man is not the brave pioneering film for the fledgling film company, but an anomaly that sort of happened independent of them fucking around. I'm even sick of the word 'reboot.' And, get this: supposedly the huge fallout was over trying to force Raimi to put Carnage in the film. Bzuh?! After what happened with Venom they didn't learn their lesson?! Well, there have been rumors of a reboot since before SM4 was announced, so I'm thinking it's just the way the company had wanted to go in the first place. Still, so close. Sighs.

Hay guys!

So, it's been a whole week since I saw Spidey 3 and I still can't get enough coherent thoughts to post about it on my journal. It was just so amazingly overwhelming; I know my sister and I just walked out of the theater almost in shock. She kept asking me, Did you like it, did you like it? And all I could do was nod dumbly. A day later I realized that, yeah, I LOVED it, but there was just something so...overwhelming (yes, that word again) about it. Raimi made some bold and bizarre choice, which is why I adores him; whether they were successful or not is a matter of debate, but I wouldn't want him to be doing anything else. It was certainly the most Raimi-ish of all three of the movies (I'm a die-hard Raimi fan first, so I loved that about it) and yay to Bruce Campbell in my favorite of all of his Spidey roles! Hopefully more thoughts will be forthcoming.

And, yays for [livejournal.com profile] jadeblood! I've no got myself my very own personal Madmartigan/Sorsha header! ♥ ! My jounral's gone all Lucas this month, with a Willow header and my prequel mood theme, because it's that time! The thirtieth anniversary of Star Wars is at hand (which coincidentally means mine is not far behind!) Well, Willow's a strech, but it is its twentieth anniversary next year! Erm, not like anyone'll remember 'cept me, but still! *Looks at the Madmartigan/Sorsha goodness and sighs dreamily*

28 Weeks Later comes out today. Looks so-so-ish. Don't understand why Robert Carlyle has been kinda type-cast as somebody's dad. I mean, obviously not in things like Eragon, where he's still type-cast as the psychopath (not that I'm complaining, mind!), but in normal-type roles. And of teenaged kids. Bleh. Throw them out to the zombies, I'll stay inside and make sweet, sweet love to Robert and call it my own personal post-apocolyptic utopia! *G*

And yes, they are zombies. You have to understand, I'm a purist. The George Romero shuffle is one of the scariest things I've seen put to films, and his movies are pure genius. But things change and evolve, in pop culture, but in culture in general as well. There are still those who complain that Romero's zombies aren't like "the real thing", i.e. voodoo-like. It's time to realize that new ideas take shape and influence the future. I might not be a fan of the fast zombie in general (c'mon! In things like the Dawn of the Dead remake, it's just plain reidiculous! They've been rotting for months! How the hell can they move that fast without bits falling off? And, hello, atrophy! That's just silly!) but 28 Days Later made its own mythos, it explained it in an unusual, convincing and frightening way. It reinvented the zombie movie.

Now others seem to be stuck between Boyle's vision and the tried and true Romero version, without allowing themselves to explore it in any unique way. Dawn of the dead was a rehash and, much as I loathe self-referential horror--because much as I love it Scream really ruined horror by blowing the whistle on its conventions--stretching to believe that the characters didn't even know that the bite is what changes people was a bit too much. And, you know, even Night of the Living Dead offered an explanation, albeit an extremely dated one about space satellites (though its message of racism will never be outdated!) Dawn of the dead--are we supposed to believe what we hear on the tv?! Hell's overflowing because of gay rights and the like? And people think this movie's radical in any good way?!

And, wow, that turned into an anti-Dawn of the Dead remake rant! I just don't get that movie. Great actors, but even the shock factor isn't high enough to make it memorable for me. Probably won't see 28 Weeks Later in the theater, and I should mention that the last third of the original 28 Days Later sucks ass big time, despite the presence of Chris Eccleston. (Yes, put those strong female characters in their place, threaten to gang bang them! That serves you right for being so independant at the beginning of the movie! Now simper girl, simper!)

Finally, check out this link: DibbukBox.Com. I remember when the original listing was on eBay; [livejournal.com profile] sheadog introduced me to it. Weird. The first story's creepy, the second anticlimatic, the third kinda offensive. I'm using a lot of it as the basis for a Supernatural fanfic I've started though.

First off: Sah-weet news concerning Spider-Man 3 says that the glorious, beautiful, talented, miraculous Bryce Dallas Howard has been cast to play the much-better-love-interest-for-Peter-than-that-skank-Mary Jane Gwen Stacy! Whooo hoooo! Love to see where they take this one! Also interesting to note that Gwen's a blonde in the comic, Bryce is naturally ginger, the opposite is true of Kirsten Dunst (and her hair looked Gawd awrful in the last one iffin you ask me!). BITE ME, Dunst! Ha!

Also a whooo hooo: First pic of Psylocke from X-Men 3 has been revealed and, yes, she has purple hair! Still don't love her being lumped with the Brotherhood, as if they were just grasping characters from the comics to make fans go 'Kewl' when it's actually detrimental to them. I would have loved Psylocke to get in there between Jean and Scott, shake things up so Jean takes her goo-goo eyes off of Logan for two seconds of film time.

But the real meat of my post now: Went to see Underworld: Evolution yesterday; both me and Ann are HUGE fans of the first. Ann was expecting more and was disappionted; I was expecting crap and was delighted! (I know, shame on me, huh? Some fan but I was just so worried they would ruin it!) The blood practically gushes from the screen but not in that sick, Hostel this-could-happen-to-you way; definitely comic-booky though it's still absolutely grotesque. Even this hardened horror fan closed her eyes when Alexander (Derek Jacobi) cut open Viktor's (Bill Nighy) chest.

Yes, the sex is "Playboy" sex: Perfectly posed, totally uninvolved, neat clean and unrevealing. It's still the only sex I've seen in a movie that wasn't hailed as a dramatic masterpiece by critics in a loooong while! Plus, hey, Scott Speedman's ass!

And that brings me to my clash with Ann: I generally find Michael to be an inoffensive addition to the cast of characters, and am even a little happy there's a romance though in no way do I want Selene going "soft." She hates him. Hates him with every fibre of her being, apparently, cos I had to listen to her tell me in the car on the way home how much she hates him in every detail. And this from the same person who got pissy with me because I was thrileld with Narnia and she adored! Honestly, she was harshing my buzz, and in no uncertain terms.

He didn't turn out to be the great savoir of the Lycan/Vampire race war, in fact, he didn't turn out to be anything very special at all and no one seemed to notice he was even there, so I was happy. He didn't come in at the end and save the day, though he helped. In other words, he took what normally is the female role in action/thriller/horror movies. He is, simply put, just the love interest. And that's good by me!

But what is this? My experience was almost totally ruined by the theater's crappy reels of loud, obnoxious commercials! Gone are the days of the cards for local businesses, trivia questions, unscramble the name and so forth. Gone even are the days of the Regal Twenty, the thingie that started 20 minutes before the show and was basically an ad for whatever TNT/TBS was pushing at the time as well as a featurette about an upcoming movie.

No, now all they do it bombard you with blasting images for the army, Coke, and M&Ms, claiming that they are, in fact, showing you behind the scenes footage (a commercial for TBS starring John Cleese was actually touted at the end of the reel as being a behind the scenes look, I kid you not!). My head was POUNDING before the previews even started and by then, I was in such a bad mood, I was truly ready to kill the projectionist. I couldn't watch the previews because of my headache (yes, I'm not exaggerating, I had a blinding headache!) and wanted to tell the makers of each individual film that popped before my eyes where to stick the Coke bottle I'd just seen four ads for! Luckily, once the movie kicked in, I was able to relax a little but I'm not being a drama queen when I say that it came this close to ruining my movie experience. In some ways it did; I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have.

I hate theaters.

Peace, Ghani
